HOW WOMEN CAN PICK THE SAFEST HIKING TRAILS/PLACES FOR PERSONAL SAFETY
HOW WOMEN CAN PICK THE SAFEST WAYS/TIMES/PLACES
TO SAFELY HIKE ON HIKING TRAILS (day or night)

Lessons learned in the wake of a tragedy. Rachel Morin, murdered on the Ma and Pa Trail, in 2023,
the father of two of her children help to come up with some of these ideas to share with all)
1. Pick a trail that is well lit, and relatively "open " in the day time
2. Grating off tunnels (have been places where many crimes
have taken place)
3. Do government areas or forrest services keep the trail well
groomed with foliage?
4. Typically, females should avoid parks after dark. If you do
choose to use a selected trail, at nighttime, you need to take
a buddy with you. It's best if the trail runs in a circle so that
you can see all you surroundings. Install motion censored
cameras, use air tags for safety. Be armed with pepper spray
or Bear Spray, a whistle, and a small foghorn. Make sure there
is lighting on THE TRAIL AFTER DARK. Crime happens is places
that are POORLY lit.
5. The more cameras, from a variety of angles, the safer the trails
are for everyone
6. Do not run with headphones/air buds in, as you cannot hear
if someone sneaks up on you from behind by using the element
of surprise.
7. See how much access there is for people outside the park,
to be able to "see in" to the park. The more visible you are,
the more risk could be involved.
