WHAT IS THE R.E.I.D. TECHNIQUE AND HOW IS IT IMPLEMENTED
INTO INTERROGATIONS?
___________________________________________
R.E.I.D. technique defined: a method/specific form of
interrogation/questioning. The technique is best known for
creating a high-pressure environment for the suspect/subject,
followed by sympathy and the offers of "understanding" and
"help." Proponents of this method find it useful in extracting
information from an otherwise unwilling subjects; that, often,
end in confession by the suspect/subject.

THE 9 ASPECTS of the R.E.I.D. TECHNIQUE
1. POSITIVE CONFRONTATION: Advise the subject that the
evidence has led police to the individual as a suspect. Offer an
early opportunity for the person/suspect an EARLY opportunity
to explain why the offense took place.
2. TRY TO SHIFT THE BLAME AWAY: Shifting the blame away from
the subject to some other person that, perhaps may have
prompted the subject(s) to commit crime.
3. MINIMIZE DENIALS
4. Move TOWARD acknowledgement
5. Reinforce sincerity
6. When the subject is quiet, offer alternatives/different
explanations
7. POSE "ALTERNATIVE SCENERIOS": giving two choices of what
happened will always leave room for a third option;
one being that, though present, didn't commit crime.
8. Have subject repeat any admission of guilt in front of witnesses
9. DOCUMEN, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT: Document subject's
admissions or confessions. Ensure you record it audibly, and,
preferably backed by by video that is a combination of both
visual and audio in one medium.
