UNDERSTANDING PROTECTIVE CUSTODY
Protective custody is a measure taken by prison administration to
shield inmates from potential threats; including keeping prisoners
safe from the physical harm of other inmates. Protective custody
is available within federal prison systems. It's main goal is
to maintain safety. Inmates housed in protected custody
live on the unit known as the SHU (Special Housing Unit).

HOW DOES PROTECTIVE CUSTODY WORK IN PRISONS?
It ensures segregation from certain prisoners and or said
prisoner's safety. The FBI recognizes the following inmates
are "eligible" for protective custody status:
1. Victims of Inmate Assault or threats
2. Inmate Informant
3. Inmate refusal to re-enter general population
4. staff concern

OTHER COMMON REASONS INMATES ARE HOUSED IN
PROTECTIVE CUSTODY
______________________________
Often, inmates convicted as sexual offenders, those known
to be informants; those that fall in those categories are more
likely then others to enter protective custody due to safety
concerns. LBGT inmates often elect protective custody over
placement in general population as well.

SIS THREAT VALIDATION INVESTIGATIONS
____________________________________
Upon placement in solitary confinement, the SIS Department,
will begin and investigation into a threat assessment/threat
validation.
When the result of assaults and threats the SIS worker will
demand disclosure of identity; which can come with troubles
of its own. Depending on the outcome of the threat validation
investigation, in inmate may stay in the SHU until they are
transfered to a different prison/whether transfer is warranted.
The SIS Department concludes its investigation by determining
validity of threats alleged/made. Inmates will, once they enter
the SHU, typically remain there indefinitely , or, until that
inmate can successfully request a transfer.
