THE PHENOMENON OF PERCEIVED TRAUMA IN MODERN DAY PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
THE PHENOMENON OF PERCEIVED TRAUMA THROUGH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS
_________________________________________-
Introduction
According to the JOURNAL OF AMERICAN health, the 2016
election was a psychologically traumatizing event for some voters.
Studies found that 1 out of 4 people surveyed experienced a
clinically significant event in the short term.
The survey asked participants to fill out surveys to determine
the emotional effect/impact had on close relationships and
displayed clinical symptoms of distress.

SYMPTOMS
Symptoms included "avoidance": a clinical term used to
describe how someone deliberately step away from whatever it
is that is causing them trauma. "Intrusion", a clinical term
meaning the inability to keep memories of the source of trauma.
The researchers also looked to see if demographics made any
difference.
Most of those surveyed, around 65% said the election had no
impact on their lives or close relationships. 24% reported
a slightly negative impact, and 10% reported positive symptoms.

WHY DID SOME GROUPS OF PEOPLE FEEL STIGMATIZED AND
NOT OTHERS?
It was found that if the election had a negative impact,
avoidance was often the defense mechanism most used. Women,
Democrats, those that do not identify as Christian, and those in
sexual minority groups reported SIGNIFICANTLY more
event-related-stress.
Of those studied, they came from diverse backgrounds and had
a mix of political opinions. 15% reported they were satisfied with
the election results. 19.2% voiced dissatisfaction. 37.5% said
they were completely dissatisfied. Another 39% reported
significant effects to their daily life.

ACCESS HOLLYWOOD HIT MIC MOMENTS 2005
When a 2005, "Access Hollywood" tape that was released,
Trump bragged about his celebrity status allowed him to behave as
aggressively with women and "get away with it." Stating, he could
"grab a woman by the pussy," and get away with it.
Comments like those mentioned above are comments that
can hit close to home with some people. Because there was literal
name-calling during the election cycle, their was strong,
divisive language and harsher rhetoric had real life consequences
for some groups of people.
Another interesting area of note, is that, in a similar study,
researchers noticed that both sides, conservatives and liberals,
have both felt discriminated against during the election; causing
lots of sleep disruption.

WHAT DID TEACHERS HAVE TO DEAL HANDLE WITH STUDENTS?
Teachers reported that they saw an immediate heightened fear
of desperation amongst students. One teacher, reporter a 7 year
old girl student asked her "if Trump could come on a bus and take
her away." Another high school student, who was expecting
a baby, asked her teacher if she would care for the child if she
was "deported." Lastly, a 2nd grade teacher, comforted a student
who was worried and crying in the fear that "when I get home
from school, my parents will be gone forever."
